University of Texas Medical Branch and Texas Southern University

Request for Applications

Applications Due: February 10, 2023
Award Period: April 1, 2023 – March 31, 2024

The Institute for Translational Sciences at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) and the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Texas Southern University (TSU) have partnered to solicit applications that will provide pilot funding for new joint projects addressing a roadblock in translational science. Both TSU and UTMB have unique strengths and expertise that complement each other, creating opportunities for successful collaborative research. These awards will provide funding and expertise to address challenges commonly found in patients from Southeast Texas that impact overall health and well-being.

Up to two awards ($15,000-$30,000 each) are available to support investigator-initiated studies. The primary goal is to use pilot funds in order to catalyze larger, extramurally funded joint collaborative projects. Priority will be given to projects that propose innovative solutions to address health disparities, public health emergency preparedness, improve safety and effectiveness, and removal of barriers to advance clinical translational research. More specifically, the proposed joint projects should address a translational research question in a particular disease or intervention development/dissemination context and provide generalizable solutions that can be applied to other translational research projects. Projects can include in vitro, in silico, animal studies, and clinical studies. The proposed project must be for a new pilot study and therefore must differentiate from existing funding.

Who should apply?
This is a collaborative project that must include Co-PIs from UTMB and TSU. Any faculty from either institution can apply. Only one application can be submitted from the same Co-PI. Priority will be given to projects that have previously established working relationships, e.g., collaborative teams from UTMB and TSU with a track record on specific projects and accomplishments.

For complete submission instructions, please download the RFA at: https://utmb.us/7g2. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 10, 2023. Late and/or incomplete applications and applications not following the specified format will not be reviewed.
