INSTITUTE FOR TRANSLATIONAL SCIENCES

Funding Opportunity (ITS 2022-1)

Clinical and Translational Pilot Projects

Applications Due: February 14, 2022

Award Period: April 1, 2022 – March 31, 2023

Up to two awards of $10,000 - $25,000 each are available to support investigator-initiated studies that have the potential to develop into clinical trials. These awards provide funding and expertise to support research at any point along the translational spectrum (preclinical research, clinical research, clinical implementation, public health, https://ncats.nih.gov/translation/spectrum), with the goal of catalyzing a larger, extramurally funded study. Projects can include animal studies, preclinical trials, or testing of diagnostics or therapeutics. Previously funded Pilots by same PI in similar area will not be funded. The proposed project must be for a new pilot study and therefore must differentiate from existing funding.

Who should apply?

UTMB investigators at the level of Assistant Professor or higher may submit as the PI for one application during the current funding cycle. Priority will be given to collaborative projects, including those involving team members from multiple departments or schools, those pairing basic scientists with clinicians, and those engaging both senior and junior faculty. Preference will be given to teams with a track record of translational research activity and outcomes. Proof of applicable CITI or ACU training is required for all team members.

What support is provided?

Up to 1 year of funding with no carry forward. Pre-award costs and faculty salaries are not allowed. Awards also include support by the ITS Clinical Trials Studio, offering expertise in statistics, design, regulatory compliance, informatics, recruitment, and community engagement, ethics, team science, training, use of the ITS Clinical Research Center, and dissemination of results. For information about the Clinical Trials Studio, visit our website: https://www.utmb.edu/its/enhancing-research/clinical-trials-studio/about-us.
