Funding Opportunity (ITS 2022-2)

Multi-institutional Cross-disciplinary Translational Technology Teams (MCT3)

Applications Due: February 14, 2022
Award Period: April 1, 2022 – March 31, 2023

A total of $75,000 is available to fund up to two inter-institutional pilot projects, ranging in size from $25,000-$75,000 each, that focus on developing technologies relevant to clinical or translational science (https://ncats.nih.gov). These awards provide funding and expertise to help Multi-institutional Cross-disciplinary Translational Technology Teams (MCT3) advance the development of a product leading to improved patient care / community health.

A successful MCT3- supported project will involve an interdisciplinary team of investigators coming from multiple institutions, schools, and departments. Successful applications must clearly illustrate that the proposed team has members and expertise coming from more than one distinct and separate institution, university, organization, agency, foundation/association, or external institute. Collectively, the team should demonstrate expertise and experience in translational research and product development. Teams should include members with the knowledge and skills needed to advance the proposed product or service using the funds and resources available for the pilot project. Applications should describe the relevant strengths of each institution as well as the rationale for the collaboration.

The pilot technology development project must demonstrate potential to improve individual or public health. While the ITS Innovation & Entrepreneurship Studio is available to assist with products at any readiness level, MCT3 awards are intended for technologies with a higher readiness level {beyond proof of concept} (https://ncai.nhlbi.nih.gov/ncai/resources/techreadylevels).Up to 1 year of funding with no carry forward is available. Pre-award costs and faculty salaries are not allowed. Indirect costs are not allowed. Awards include support by the ITS Innovation & Entrepreneurship Studio (https://www.utmb.edu/innovations), which serves as a point of access for training, mentoring, collaboration, specialized expertise, and incubator space. Interested applicants can contact the Studio to discuss their ideas, identify needed resources, and assess their readiness (innovate@utmb.edu).
