N3C at the Institute for Translational Sciences and its CTSA

The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences of the National Institutes of Health has launched a centralized, secure enclave to store and study vast amounts of patient medical record data from those individuals that have had a test for coronavirus disease across the country. It is part of an effort called the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C), which represents a shared vision for turning data into the knowledge urgently needed to address the pandemic by helping scientists analyze these data to understand the disease and develop treatments. This effort aims to transform clinical information into knowledge urgently needed to study COVID-19, including health risk factors that indicate better or worse outcomes of the disease, and identify potentially effective treatments. The UTMB ITS/CTSA, together with TriNetX, is an important partner of the N3C initiative and is participating in data contribution, workflow analytics development, and governance of the COVID-19 patient data.

The Palantir analytical platform hosts and provide access to the data, dashboards, as well as R and Python interpreters. N3C provides 3 tiers of data access: synthetic (Registered Tier), deidentified patient data (Controlled Tier), and de-identified patient data with zip code and time data points (Controlled Plus Tier).

Every UTMB PI can request access to the data/platform by going to: https://covid.cd2h.org/. A detailed description of the project, Data Use Request, and IRB approval may be required depending on the level of data access requested. For more information regarding each tier and the requirements for access, please visit https://covid.cd2h.org/N3C_governance. Access to the system is provided via an internet browser. Each PI will have their own dedicated user space to access, store, and manage datasets and any available ontologies for their analysis. In addition to prebuilt dashboards that provide the common analytical tools, PIs will be able to upload and execute their own R and Python scripts on the platform at no cost.

If you have any questions or need help getting access to the system, setting up accounts, or have questions on use, please reach out to Dr. Spratt (hespratt@utmb.edu) or Dr. Golovko (gegolovk@utmb.edu)
